Track Biography:

East Down Foxhounds Point-to-Point course at Tyrella is situated at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains made famous by the Percy French song.

With the 2018 Spring season, East Down will have been racing at Tyrella for fifty four years. Two meetings are held each Spring, in January and March.

Normally the first meeting of the Spring calendar in the Northern Region, Tyrella is a right handed undulating track where, given it’s close proximity to the sea and sandy soil is well drained and more often than not, produces good going.

How To Get There

By Road

From The South:
Take the M1 North from Dublin. In Newry take the A25 through Rathfriland. In Clough at T junction go right and immediately left to get to Tyrella.

From the West:
Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Go through Seaforde village and then Clough. At the end of Clough Main Street turn left, following the sign for Tyrell. The course is on the right after about four miles.

From the North:
Take the M2 to Belfast. Continue on to the M1. Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Facilities

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.

This allows racegoers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.

We have bookmakers on site and some will also show and take bets on track racing in both Ireland and England.
 

Food

Our outside catering vendor has a variety of catering options from tasty hot lunches to sandwiches and confectionary.

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

We don?t have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing.

Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

A day at Tyrella point-to-point races is the ideal day out for all the family in the heart of the Mourne Country.

One of the real treats of racing at Tyrella, is just how close racegoers can get to the action.

Watch the horses being saddled up by their trainers before making your way to the parade ring where the horses, jockeys and connections gather to discuss their pre-race tactics.

A strong showing was clearly expected from NAMEYOURGAME, as the close relation of the Cheltenham Festival winner Put The Kettle On, was sent off as an odds-on favourite when making his debut at Oldtown last month. That was over the shorter two and a half mile trip, but this course and the likely better conditions should stand to him. Of the others with experience, Milord DAnjou may have only finished an 18-length sixth in Bellharbour, but he likely ran better than that finishing result, in what will have been an educational introduction.

WEST OF IDAHO was certainly not winning out of turn when he opened his account here in January, as he had started off his career last year by getting within four lengths of the leading Champion Bumper contender Keep Him Company. It may have taken him five further attempts to get his head in front, but now having done so, he could swiftly double his tally. Time In A Bottle was also a winner at the January meeting here, and a return to this track should be a positive for her after venturing to Knockanard last time, whilst the returning Arkhill could be capable of more on his belated seasonal re-appearance.

CLOUGH CLOUDS may be turning out just seven days after his Farmacaffley success; however, he won with what looked like quite a bit in hand on that occasion, which should see him quickly back up here as he is quite a bit ahead of these rivals on previous form. The Loughanmore maiden winner Colvin should enjoy the drop in grade, and he could be next best.

The INHSC are generously sponsoring this race with an additional BONUS to the winning owner of €800. If it is necessary to run more than one division of this race the INHSC BONUS of €800 will be divided accordingly. For Novice Riders who, at midnight on the Monday prior to the closing of entries, have not ridden more than fifteen winners under any Rules of Racing or Steeplechasing, including Point to Point Steeplechases. Riders who have not ridden more than 5 winners are entitled to a 5lb allowance.

Sam Curling could add to his 32 winners so far this season in this, as his COOLCULLEN and Glenmalure Flyer have both been knocking on the door for some time, with a combined seven placed finishes between them from this season alone. The 83-rated hurdler Firstupbestdressed did not get very far on his chasing debut at Downpatrick in August, but on the pick of his track form he would not be without his chances against the Curling pair.
